David the Shepherd: God Looks at the Heart – 25th January 2026

This week at JAM, the children explored the story of David the shepherd boy, discovering how God chose him even though he didn’t look like the obvious choice. Together we learned that while people often judge by what they see on the outside, God looks at the heart.

The session began with a creative activity making sheep biscuits, linking to David’s life as a shepherd. The children iced their biscuits, sprinkled coconut for fluffy wool, used chocolate buttons for faces and added eyes, enjoying being creative and giving their sheep big smiles.

As part of our discussion, the children took part in a thought-provoking activity where they were asked to arrange different items in order of worth. A walnut was chosen as the cheapest item, but when it was cracked open, the children discovered £20 hidden inside, showing that what looks least valuable on the outside can be worth far more on the inside – just as God sees our hearts.

We also watched a short video about David being chosen by God and shared a gentle time of prayer, with music playing while the children could bring their thoughts to God and write down things they were thinking about or names of people they were worried about, if they wanted to.

There was plenty of laughter during a fun organising game, lining ourselves up by things such as hand size, shoe size and month of birth, while others tried to guess how we had arranged ourselves.

We also spent time learning Psalm 23, discovering how David described God as a loving Shepherd who guides, protects and stays with us even when things feel difficult. This included an energetic team challenge, with children running back and forth to collect and correctly order the verses of the psalm.

We listened to “You Say” by Lauren Daigle, a song that reminds us that God knows us, loves us and speaks truth over us, even when we don’t always feel sure of ourselves.
