JAM – Learning About True Friendship: David & Jonathan
Our recent JAM session focused on the theme of friendship and how God calls us to love and encourage one another.
The children began with our regular welcome song, before taking part in a creative prayer activity. They made paper people chains by drawing around templates and carefully cutting them out. During prayer time, each person on the strip represented a friend, and we took time to pray thoughtfully for the friends in our own lives. It was a simple but meaningful way of encouraging the children to think about others.
We also spent time discussing what makes a good friend.
The children shared some wonderful insights – a friend who is kind, a friend who listens well, a friend who helps, and someone who is trustworthy. We then looked more closely at the friendship between David and Jonathan from the book of Samuel. Through the talk and video, we saw how their friendship was built on loyalty, courage
and selflessness. Jonathan stood by David even when it was difficult, choosing faithfulness and love over jealousy or rivalry. Their story helped us see what it means to truly “build one another up” and to put others before ourselves.

Our Bible readings, 1 Thessalonians 5:11 and Ephesians 4:32, reminded us to encourage one another and to be kind and compassionate. We talked about how God wants to show His love through us in our friendships.
Creatively, the children made friendship bracelets using three threads: one to represent themselves, one for a friend, and a third to remind us that God is woven into our relationships, holding us together and helping us to share His love.
We were encouraged to hear feedback about the Lent jars given to the children at the beginning of lent. It was wonderful to hear that one child completed an action by sending a kind note – a small act that made a big difference. These moments show faith being lived out in everyday life.
We discussed the upcoming Mother’s Day Family Service and it was lovely to see so many children happy to help at the service. The children enjoyed creating beautiful Mother’s Day cards, too, thoughtfully made and filled with love for the special people in their lives.
We closed with the song “Build Up One Another” by Fischy music, reminding us again of our calling to strengthen and support each other as part of God’s family.
